Avionics Stack
Avionics Stack
What?
The onboard avionics stack, ACORN, is a fully integrated rocketry board with GNC and pyrotechnic capabilities. It consists of two independent PCB's: A top layer which is responsible for radio communication with a LORA radio module and GPS, and a bottom layer, comprised of all sensors necessary for active control and pyrotechnic capabilities.
How?
Design
For PCB design, KiCad and EasyEDA were used to construct schematics as well as route tracing. Design for the Avionics housing was performed using SolidWorks to create the parts and assembly.
Fabrication
A prototype was first manufactured in house using a LPKF PCB Milling Machine to test component traces before finally ordering boards through an online manufacturer.
Each part was 3D printed using a Bambu Labs X1C and their slicing suite, Bambu Studio. Finally, programming was performed using the board's onboard microcontroller's Arduino interface in C++
Tools: KiCad, EasyEDA, SolidWorks, Bambu Studio
Results
End Product
3 independently regulated pyro channels, barometric pressure sensor, inertial measurement unit, Lora onboard Telemetry, GPS all successfully integrated onto an all in one board stack which is capable of providing all the sensing needs of a High-Power Rocket. MOSFETs are used to fire electric matches onboard a rocket, which will ignite black power charges used for parachute deployment.
Application
ACORN also provided the basis for the 2DOF TVC Gimbal with capabilities for actuator integration to support future developments.
